GTA 6 on PS5 vs PS5 Pro vs Xbox Series X: what’s confirmed and which to play on

If you already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X, play GTA 6 on that. Don’t buy a PS5 Pro just for it until Rockstar says what the Pro version actually adds. Rockstar has confirmed the game launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It has not confirmed a 60fps mode on any console.

Label: comparison and explainer. We separate what Rockstar has confirmed from reports and rumours. Sources are linked below.

What has Rockstar actually confirmed?

Three things: the date, November 19, 2026; the platforms, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; and that there is no PC version at launch. That’s it. Everything about resolution and frame rate is still reporting, not an official spec sheet.

Our GTA 6 release guide covers the date history in full.

Will GTA 6 run at 60fps?

Probably not, at least at launch. Reports point to 30 frames per second on consoles, and coverage quotes Rockstar’s Rob Nelson as saying the team is targeting 30, according to Shattered and Tech Insider. Rockstar has not announced a performance mode.

That’s not unusual for Rockstar. Red Dead Redemption 2 also launched at 30fps on consoles. Rockstar tends to spend its power on detail and density, not frame rate.

Is GTA 6 better on PS5 Pro?

It will probably look a bit better, but nobody outside Rockstar and Sony knows how much. The game is reported to carry PS5 Pro Enhanced labelling, but no details of what that means for GTA 6 have been published, according to GTA Lab and Sportskeeda.

On other games, Pro enhancements usually mean sharper images or steadier frame rates, not a different game. If a 60fps Pro mode is confirmed, that would change our advice. Until then, buying a Pro just for GTA 6 is paying for a promise.

Is the Xbox Series X version as good as PS5?

Expect them to be very close. The base PS5 and Series X are similar in power, and big multi-platform games usually look almost the same on both. The cheaper Series S is the one to watch: it has less power and memory, so expect lower resolution there.

Which console should you play GTA 6 on?

We used the Pylcrow Launch Day Test: four questions, each scored 0, 1 or 2, for a total out of 8. These scores reflect what’s known now and will change if Rockstar publishes specs.

A four-way tie is the honest answer. There is no clear winner yet, which is exactly why the best console is the one you already have.

Pylcrow’s take: wait for the Digital Foundry-style tests before spending

Every big game gets detailed technical breakdowns within days of release. If you’re deciding between consoles, wait a week after November 19 and look at side-by-side tests. You’ll lose a few days of play and might save hundreds on hardware you didn’t need.

And if you’ve waited this long for GTA 6, 30fps in Rockstar’s most detailed world yet will still feel like an event.
