How did John Wick become a billion-dollar franchise?

Smart summary

John Wick grew from a small 2014 revenge movie that made about $86 million into a series that passed $1 billion worldwide by May 2023, because it treated fight scenes as craft and built an underworld people wanted to return to. Its next move is backwards: on November 5, 2026, Lionsgate greenlit an animated prequel with Keanu Reeves returning, while Chapter 5 still isn’t locked.

In October 2014, audiences met a quiet widower named John Wick in a big, empty house. His late wife, Helen, had left him a beagle puppy called Daisy so he wouldn’t grieve alone. Then a gangster’s son, Iosef Tarasov, broke in, stole his 1969 Mustang and killed the dog.

Four films, a TV series and a spinoff all grow out of that one scene. The man behind the camera was Chad Stahelski, Reeves’ stunt double on The Matrix, directing his first feature.

The first film was a modest hit, not a phenomenon: about $86 million worldwide on a budget reported at $20 million to $30 million. What brought people back was the world around the revenge story. The Continental hotel where no business can be done, gold coins as currency, and a High Table that owns every assassin.

Each chapter then got bigger, and the audience grew with it.

In May 2023, Lionsgate said the four films had passed $1 billion worldwide. The craft mattered as much as the lore: long, readable takes, Reeves training in judo, jiu-jitsu and tactical shooting, and stunt work from Stahelski’s 87Eleven team that you can actually follow.

Can John Wick work without Keanu Reeves?

This is the strongest case against the franchise’s future. Lionsgate has tried twice to grow the world without Reeves at the center. The Continental, a three-part prequel about a young Winston, streamed on Peacock in September 2023 to mixed reviews.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, opened on June 6, 2025, with $25 million in North America, the weakest start for the series since the original. Reeves appears in it only in a supporting role, and by July 2025 it had made about $131.7 million worldwide on a reported $90 million budget.

The pattern is hard to ignore. People like the world, but they buy tickets for the man, and Reeves turned 62 in September 2026. Chapter 4 also ended with Wick’s grave next to Helen’s.

Lionsgate’s answer is to go back in time. On its November 5, 2026, earnings call, the studio confirmed it had greenlit an animated John Wick film, already in pre-production, with Reeves signed to return. Shannon Tindle, director of Netflix’s Ultraman: Rising, is directing from a script by Ryan and Kaz Firpo.

The story is the “Impossible Task”, the job Wick finished to leave the High Table and marry Helen. Fans have heard about it since the 2014 film but never seen it. Animation lets Reeves play a younger Wick without asking a 62-year-old body to take the hits.

Chapter 5 is still a maybe. Lionsgate announced it at CinemaCon in April 2025, along with a Caine spinoff directed by Donnie Yen, but no shoot date has been set, and Stahelski has said it won’t simply continue the High Table story.

Pylcrow’s take: the dog was the whole pitch

Go back to Daisy. The series never worked because of body counts. It worked because one grieving man had a reason anyone could understand, and every chapter was built on that grief.

That’s why the spinoffs stumbled and why the prequel makes sense: it goes back to Helen, the reason behind everything. If the animated film remembers that, it can be more than a cash-in.

Verdict: the box office figures, the November 5, 2026, greenlight and Reeves’ return are Documented. The idea that Chapter 5 will leave the High Table story behind is Claimed, from Stahelski’s interviews. Our read that the series lives or dies on Reeves is Interpreted, and when, or whether, Chapter 5 arrives is Unresolved.

Quick answers

Is John Wick dead at the end of Chapter 4?

The film ends at his grave next to Helen’s, with Winston and the Bowery King standing over it. Lionsgate has since confirmed Reeves for Chapter 5 and the animated prequel, so the story isn’t over, even if that ending looks final.

What is John Wick’s Impossible Task?

It’s the job Wick completed to walk away from his old life. In the 2014 film, Viggo Tarasov says Wick killed all of Viggo’s rivals in one night to earn his way out. The animated prequel will be the first time we see it.
