WoW Forever vs Classic vs Retail: which World of Warcraft should you play?
Play WoW Forever if you loved the original Azeroth but want new places to explore, Classic if you want the 2004 game exactly as it was, and Retail if you want the newest story and the fastest, most modern combat. All three come with the same World of Warcraft subscription, so the real cost is your time, not your money. Forever launches worldwide on November 4, 2026.
Label: comparison and opinion. Launch details come from Blizzard and launch coverage linked below. Forever is brand new, so how it plays after the first months is still unknown.
Blizzard calls Forever a third permanent version of World of Warcraft, sitting alongside the modern game and Classic. Fans have asked for a “Classic+” for years: the old world, the old pace, but with new content. Forever is Blizzard’s answer, and it changes which version makes sense for you.
What is WoW Forever, and when does it launch?

WoW Forever is a new version of the original Azeroth that keeps the old level cap of 60 and adds things the 2004 game never had. Coverage of Blizzard’s reveal lists new zones, quests, dungeons and raids, a new playable race called the Skyborne, and new race and class combinations. Insider Gaming puts the global launch at 3pm Pacific on Wednesday, November 4, which is 11pm GMT.
The key word is “permanent”. Blizzard is not pitching Forever as a limited seasonal server. According to Wccftech’s BlizzCon coverage, it gets its own content roadmap. That matters, because the biggest complaint about Classic was always the same: once you’d done everything, there was nothing new.
How is Forever different from WoW Classic?

Classic is a preservation project. Forever is a continuation. Classic recreates the original game as it was, quirks and all, so the joy is in remembering. Forever starts from that same world but keeps adding to it, so the joy is in discovering.
That makes the choice simple for most lapsed players. If your favourite memory is the exact feeling of 2005, with the same quests and the same raids in the same order, Classic still does that best. If your favourite memory is the feeling of not knowing what was over the next hill, Forever is the only version that can give you that again, because Classic’s hills have all been mapped for twenty years.
Should you stay on Retail with Midnight instead?

Yes, if you want the newest story, modern combat and the most to do every week. Retail is the live game, and its current expansion, Midnight, launched on March 2, 2026 with a level cap of 90, new zones, dungeons, delves, raids and player housing.
Retail also respects a busy schedule better than either old-world version. Classic and Forever are built around slow levelling and long group sessions. Retail lets you jump into a short solo delve in twenty minutes and still make progress. For anyone playing alongside a full-time job, that difference is bigger than any feature list.
How does Pylcrow score each version?
We used the Pylcrow Azeroth Fit Test: four questions, each scored 0, 1 or 2, for a total out of 8. A higher score means a better fit for that need.
| Question | WoW Forever | WoW Classic | Retail (Midnight) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does it feel like the original Azeroth? | 2 | 2 | 0 |
| Is there new content to discover? | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Does it fit short play sessions? | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| Is it easy for a brand-new player? | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Total | 5/8 | 3/8 | 6/8 |
Retail wins on paper because it suits the most people. But scores hide taste. A returning fan who only cares about the first two rows should read the table as Forever 4, Classic 2, Retail 2.
Which version should you pick?

Pick the one that matches how you actually play, not how you played at 16.
- You quit years ago and miss the old world: start with Forever. It’s the version made for you.
- You want a perfect museum of 2004: Classic, and don’t look back.
- You have an hour a night and want progress: Retail with Midnight.
- You’ve never played: Retail first, because the tutorial and modern systems are far kinder. Try Forever once you know the basics.
One subscription covers all three, according to launch coverage, so you can test Forever on day one and still keep a Retail character.
Pylcrow’s take: Forever is the most interesting thing Blizzard has done with WoW in years
For two decades, Blizzard had two choices: move the game forward and lose the old feeling, or freeze the old feeling and run out of content. Forever is the first real attempt to do both. That’s a big creative bet, and it’s the kind of risk we like to see from a studio that could easily coast.
The danger is obvious too. New content in an old world only works if it feels like it always belonged there. If the new zones feel like Retail ideas wearing a 2004 costume, the nostalgia crowd will notice within a week. We’ll judge it on that one test once we’ve played the launch content.
