Do you need to watch Godzilla Minus One before Godzilla Minus Zero?

You can follow Godzilla Minus Zero without seeing Minus One, but you shouldn’t skip it. The sequel is set in 1949, two years after the first film, and brings back the same family at its centre. The monster scenes work on their own. The emotional ones only land if you know what Kōichi and Noriko went through. Minus Zero opens in Japan on November 3 and in the US on November 6, 2026.

Is Godzilla Minus Zero a direct sequel to Minus One?

Yes. Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One and led its visual effects, is back in all three roles. The story picks up in 1949. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Kōichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko, now married. Hidetaka Yoshioka and Yuki Yamada also return. Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa and Jun Kunimura join the cast in new roles.

What happened at the end of Minus One? (spoilers)

Skip this section if you plan to watch the first film. Kōichi, a kamikaze pilot who couldn’t make himself die in the war, spends the film unable to forgive himself. In the finale, he flies at Godzilla in a plane packed with explosives, but this time he ejects and chooses to live. Godzilla is destroyed, at least for now. Then comes the twist: Noriko, believed killed in Godzilla’s attack on Ginza, survived. In the final shot, a dark mark spreads on her neck, and the sinking remains of Godzilla start to regenerate.

Minus Zero starts from those two loose threads. That’s why the first film isn’t optional homework. It’s the setup for everything the sequel asks you to feel.

What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?

Godzilla returns, bigger and angrier, and Kōichi, who now has a family to protect, is pulled back into the fight. Early reviews say the stakes are more personal this time, built around Noriko and what her survival really means. We’ll keep the rest spoiler-free. Early reviews do confirm that Godzilla isn’t the only monster this time.

How does Minus Zero make you feel?

This is a Mood Match piece, Pylcrow’s way of matching films to the feeling they leave you with.

Minus One wasn’t really a monster movie. It was a film about guilt: a man who survived when he wasn’t supposed to, in a country that had just lost everything. Godzilla was the size of that guilt. That’s why people cried at a Godzilla film, which nobody expected.

Minus Zero flips the feeling. Kōichi has stopped wanting to die. Now he has something to lose, and that’s a different kind of fear. If Minus One felt like grief, the early reaction suggests Minus Zero feels like dread: the fear of a parent, not a soldier. Watch it when you want a blockbuster that still leaves you quiet on the way home.

Is Godzilla Minus Zero any good?

The early signs are strong. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival in September, and reviews have been mostly positive. Screen Daily praised Kamiki and Hamabe’s performances and the bigger action. Den of Geek said it doesn’t quite reach the haunted feeling of the original, and CBR noted some clumsy moralising but called it a bigger, scarier sequel. The common view: louder and bigger than Minus One, slightly less devastating.

Where can you watch Godzilla Minus One?

Minus One has been on Netflix in many countries, but streaming rights change by region. Check JustWatch or your local services before the weekend. It’s 125 minutes, so it fits into one evening before a cinema trip.

Pylcrow’s take

I’m a huge Godzilla fan, especially Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the other films from the MonsterVerse. But what the Japanese did with Godzilla Minus One was incredibly smart. Setting the story in post-WWII Japan gave it a completely different emotional weight, turning Godzilla into something far more terrifying and meaningful. And the CGI? Absolutely insane, especially considering the film’s relatively modest budget.

I’m definitely watching Minus Zero in the cinema. There’s something special about seeing Godzilla through the eyes of the country that created him.
