John Wick animated movie: the Impossible Task, explained

Smart summary

Yes, the animated John Wick movie is officially happening: on November 5, 2026, Lionsgate said the prequel is in preproduction, with Keanu Reeves voicing John and producing. It will finally show the “Impossible Task,” the one-night job that freed Wick from the High Table, but there’s no title or release date yet.

In the first John Wick, a mob boss sits his son down in a quiet office and tells him a story. Viggo Tarasov explains that the man whose dog the son just killed is not “the Boogeyman.” He’s the one you send to kill the Boogeyman. Then he describes a night when John Wick did a job nobody thought possible, so he could leave and marry the woman he loved.

For twelve years, that night has been the franchise’s best-kept secret. We heard about it. We never saw it. Now Lionsgate wants to draw it.

Official trailer: John Wick (2014), the film the animated prequel leads into, from Lionsgate Movies on YouTube. The animated movie has no trailer yet.

What is the John Wick animated movie about?

It’s the night Viggo talked about. The studio’s description says the film goes back to before the first movie, as John “completes the Impossible Task in order to free himself from his obligation to the High Table.” In the 2014 film, that task meant wiping out Viggo’s rivals so Viggo could take power, and it bought John his way out.

The project was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2025. On November 5, 2026, Lionsgate confirmed on its earnings call that it is officially a go and in preproduction, as first reported by Animation Magazine and Deadline.

Will a John Wick prequel ruin the mystery?

That’s the strongest worry, and it’s fair. The Impossible Task works because it’s a legend. Viggo’s speech makes John bigger than any fight could, because your imagination fills in the bodies. Show the night in full and it becomes just another action scene.

The second worry is physical. This franchise is built on Reeves doing his own gun-fu, trained by Stahelski’s 87Eleven stunt team, in long takes you can follow. Animation can do anything, which is exactly the risk. When nothing is hard, nothing is impressive.

And prequels have a track record. Knowing the ending, that John walks away and marries Helen, drains the tension unless the film finds a different question to ask.

Why could animation be the right way to tell it?

Because the question isn’t “can he do it?” It’s “what did it cost him?” That’s a love story wrapped in a massacre, and that’s where Tindle’s record matters. His Ultraman: Rising, released on Netflix in June 2024, was a giant-monster film that was really about a lonely man learning to care for a baby kaiju.

Animation also solves a problem live action can’t. A younger John Wick, with Reeves now in his sixties, would need de-aging or a recast. A drawn John can be any age, and Reeves’s voice keeps him the same man.

Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson put the fan logic plainly at CinemaCon 2025: “There is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the Impossible Task.” He’s right. It’s the one story every fan already half-knows.

Pylcrow’s take: show the cost, not the count

Viggo’s story scared his son because it was about will, not body count. If this film gives us Helen and the reason John wanted out, the legend grows. If it’s just 90 minutes of drawn headshots, Viggo’s speech was better.

  • Documented: the film is greenlit and in preproduction, with Tindle directing, the Firpos writing and Reeves voicing John.
  • Claimed: a 2025 report said it will be R-rated. Lionsgate hasn’t repeated that.
  • Interpreted: Helen will be the heart of the story (our read of the premise).
  • Unresolved: title, release date, animation style and the rest of the voice cast.

Verdict: real, promising, and years away from a screen. Keep expectations at “legend,” not “trailer.”
